This kind of landscape ...Don't be disappointed. This kind of landscape is something I am very familiar with, as you can see from my reasoning. After all I know the west coast of Norway very well, and I know enough about glacial landscapes to know there was only one other place to search. I have spent countless hours staring out of airplane windows at this kind of landscape!
I dont think there are many other Norwegians or Portuguese playing WoGE, so maybe I had an unfair advantage? First of all, the...This was an interesting one. :)

First of all, the very long and straight valley is most likely fault controlled. Also it looks very much like it's glacial and has a classic "U" shape. Third, the rocks look crystalline, not sedimentary. Fourth, it seems the valley is incised in an elevated plateu which means it's not in an active orogenic area.

Those things eliminate most of the world including all of the west coast of both Americas as well as the east coast of Russia.

That leaves two possible locations: Norway and Portugal. It's not Norway, we usually have only one road (if any) through any valley and certainly none climbing to teh top of the mountain on the side of a more-or-less N-S valley.

So Portugal it is, then. :)

40° 22.551'N 7° 32.960'W

Vale de Manteigas, with the outskirts of Manteigas just visible in the Northern (bottom) edge of the picture.

The valley cuts through the Serra de Estrela, "Mountains of the Stars".
"The mountain range, situated between the municipalities of Seia, Manteigas, Gouveia, Guarda and Covilhã, is about 100 km (62.14 mi) long and is 30 km (18.64 mi) at its widest point. It is formed from a huge granite ridge that once formed the southern frontier of the country. Due to its bizarrely shaped crags and gorges, mountain streams and lakes, beautiful forests and magnificent views, the area ranks among Portugal’s outstanding scenic attractions."

"During the Quaternary period, the entire region was subjected to the action of ice and once this disappeared visible marks were left on the landscape. Valleys in the shape of horseshoes, ravines, polished rocks and lakes of glacial origin are just some of the formations that demonstrate the importance of the ice and snow in modelling the mountains."
Ole Tjugenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12465157136272803838noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6342517513589126493.post-19496310502822309222013-07-07T22:30:34.910+01:002013-07-07T22:30:34.910+01:00Well, that's going to be dificult ... but ...
