Ole's (kind of) tip in the last WoGe made me forget America and Europe - so I started, very loosely and about 100km high, around 60ºE (near Uzbekistan) and go East, not following the Silk Road :)
Lucky me, not after much time of chasing green brownish areas, I found salt!

Now, let's chase something else:

As usual, your goal is to find out the exact location and the geology of this place and, if you are the first, you can have the honor of presenting the next WoGE.
This beautifull spot deserves more time so, again, I'm calling Schott's Rule! -> Publish time: 2015-10-01/16:42 (GMT+1)

Rules, tips and previous WoGEs are collected by Felix on his blog and a KML file (for Google Earth) is available with all WoGEs.

  1. Over a week now ... time for a hint!

    Quartzite ... here? Why?

  2. Well ... this has gone too far - from now on I'll publish a hint every other day!

This very special structure has intrigued scientists since the 1950s and it was only in the late 1970s that it was discovered what it was.

  3. -16.746, 126.095 Spider Crater Australia. It is a deeply eroded remnant of a former impact crater. The central area bearing shatter cones is interpreted as the relic of a central uplift with the outer limits of disturbance confined to a subcircular area about 11 x 13 km in diameter; the original crater may have been slightly greater than this due to the depth of erosion. The asymmetry of the structure lead some geologists to conclude that the projectile had a very low angle trajectory from the north or northwest, while others suggest that the asymmetry may be at least partly due to the effect of pre-existing topography. The age of the Spider impact event is not accurately constrained, but it has been argued it occurred after gentle folding of the Palaeoproterozoic quartzite, but before a regional episode of glacial erosion; if correct it occurred between 900-600 Ma i.e. during the Neoproterozoic. 1. Yep! That's it!
I'm still surprised to have gone so long without being discovered ...

      Felix, let's go!

  4. It could take 1-3 day until I have a new one..... My stock of possible WOGE locations is very very low.

  5. Lady and Gentlemen, here is the next challenge ready for hunting
